They often differentiate among people of different genders, classes, ethnic groups, human race, sex orientations, and Cultural Other as different considerations of interest and authority (power), partial self-consciousness and subject value, etc. Therefore, people who have appeared in the news that media audiences see through mass media is completely a representation which is behind numerous news frames and after filtration. Meanwhile, it is another outcome of social construction as well.
After 1990, a considerable number of studies on gender, female, feminism, and the media came into prominence. Principally, they concentrated on the cause of patriarchy and ideology’s oppression on female, manipulation of gender stereotype and gender myth, and female subjectivity. And these studies accord feminist’s emphasis on female differences and experiences, critique and reform of patriarchy structure, and pursuit of social justice and gender equality.
Although 15 years have passed by, is there any happen to media-made female image? Does the way they portray and report female differentiate from the past? What media production factors made these changes? These are the questions that this study is going to find out and explore thoroughly.
Xia-yi(夏禕, Chinese actress), who appeared to be the major role in the love affair incidence with Ni Min-jan(倪敏然, the famous comedian in Taiwan), is the object of this study. The study commences with textual analysis in China Times, United Daily News, Apple Daily, and etc to study their structure of narration, meaning of text, vein of context, source of information, effect of news production, and the image of Xia-yi. Next, 6 journalists were interviewed to know their viewpoints and perspectives. Lastly, the findings from textual analysis are verified and cross-examined.
This study is concluded with 5 major findings as follows,
(1) The mainstream of public opinion is constructed merely upon the value and viewpoint of male; however, female become the scapegoat under media’s counterfeit awareness due to the lack of gender consciousness.
(2) Patriarchy ideology crams the process the news production and the myth of audience rating stow away to media masculinity make female consumed and oppressed by the media. However, the justice for female always comes late or even vanishes.
(3) Tabloidisation of media, which brings out the media’s multi-faced discrimination and conflict on female individual differences, often becomes the original sin of female added by the culture of patriarchy.
(4) female who could meet the standard of expectancy of patriarchy is often disciplined and constrained with extremely high criterion. And the case of Xia-yi became the example by warning.
(5) The alienation and disobeying of television audience have driven the media to become self-disciplined and self-modified.
