Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 華語文教學研究所 === 94 === Abstract The purpose of this paper is to research what kind of guessing strategies Japanese learners will use to guess the meaning of new words which they meet in the reading process. Through this study, we can understand the characteristics of Japanese learners, help them use guessing strategies in the process of reading Chinese, and enhance their ability of reading comprehension. There were ten subjects, whose Chinese level is all at the intermediate level. The results showed that when the subjects meet new words in the reading process, the guessing strategies most used is "the meaning of morpheme", the second one is "the context." The research also discovered that when reading the intermediate articles, because the subjects can understand the general idea, they can comparatively display the effectiveness of guessing strategies. However, when reading high-level articles, they don’t really understand the content, so the guessing strategies are unable to help the subjects guess the meanings of words effectively. In addition, the research also discovered that the subjects can clearly perceive whether the guessing strategies they used can help them successfully guess the word meaning when reading the intermediate articles. It means that the metacognition ability of those subjects has indeed played an important role in the guessing process. However, when reading the high-level articles, the metacognition ability of subjects is unable to display the same effect. Finally, this research compared the word meanings the Japanese learners guessed with the original meanings, and discovered if the teachers strengthen the understanding of how the words are constructed when they teach reading, it will be helpful for students to raise the probability of correct guess with the knowledge of word construction.
