The objective of this study was to understand the knowledge, attitude and action intention of elementary and college students in Taiwan and Japan on the issues related to the greenhouse effect and climate change. These students were investigated for understanding their performances in knowledge, attitude, and action intention related to the greenhouse effect and climate change. Differences in these performances between students with different backgrounds were also examined.
A custom-designed “greenhouse and climate change questionnaire” for questionnaire survey was designed and employed in this study. The judgment sampling method was used for selecting the participants - a total of 1,120 elementary students and 733 college students in the north, central, south, and east districts of Taiwan. The convenience sampling method was used for selecting 80 elementary students and 180 college students in Japan. Data were analyzed using t-test, one–way and two-way ANOVA, Chi-square test, and Pearson correlation statistical methods. The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
1. The majority of students in both Taiwan and Japan have heard of the subjects named “greenhouse effect” and “climate change”. The college students are relatively more familiar with the Kyoto Protocol than elementary school students. More college students in Japan have heard of Kyoto Protocol than the Taiwanese college students.
2. In the issue of message delivery of the greenhouse effect and climate change, most students in Taiwan and college students in Japan obtain the information from the school curriculum, television news and the films. Japanese elementary school students received information mainly from television programs, films, magazines and friends.
3. Most students have not heard of any activity hosted by the government regarding the green house effect and climate change.
