Through the third generation mobile phone development, smart phone devices can utilize the wireless network to transmit information, including voice message and images. Because the wireless transmission speed and the bandwidth are expanded drastically in these years, the multimedia communication era has arrived. The wireless network development in smart-phone devices, either combing the third generation mobile communication, 802.11b or WiMAX, increases the transmission speed and the bandwidth, which makes the smart-phone applications proliferate to be applied for the global positioning system (GPS), electronic map (e-Map) and M-Commerce. In addition, MPEG-4 technology has made the limited communication bandwidth more effective for multimedia data transmission. In this thesis, we have implemented a multimedia streaming system - iv for smart-phone devices. Our system platform employs Linux OS, and combines the MPEG-4 technology for audio-video data compression. The data transmission is achieved through TCP/IP protocol for two-way communications to provide various interactive services for users. Through our system, users can watch TV programs or monitor their houses through the Internet, no matter where they are. Besides, through the two-way interaction mode, users can remotely control all kinds of electric apparatus or security systems of their houses.
