With a increasing number of 51,000 every year.About 25,000 stroke patients are unable to satisfactory self-improvement of their health within 6 months, which is the golden period of self-recovery.Therefore,they are fallen into the long-term care situation, which require the expensive costs and lead to the personal, family, and society great burden. This research aimed at the evaluation of the effect of supplemental food on moderate handicapped stroke patients. Patients suffered from stroke more than 6 months and were confirmed by computer tomography was classfied into A and B (the control) groups for 8 weeks of investigation. Besides present care system, the tests (A) group adopted supplemental food. On the other hand, the control only adopted the care system. The effect of supplemental food was evaluated by NIH Stroke he Barthel index, the stroke recovery progress index, and interview video. In this study, there were 9 patients grouped into A and 7 into B. Besides, 16 of the 17 participants accomplished the test work. Total rate of improvement for the test group was 33.1% (P=0.002 < 0.01 for intergroup test, and P=0.002 < 0.01 for intragroup test) by NIHSS and 65.4%(P=0.005 < 0.01 for intergroup test, and P=0.008 < 0.01 for intragroup test) by Barthel Index. Furthermore, there were 5 suffering from speech disablement in A group, and 4 of them had apparent improvement according to the video record. The study illustrated that stroke patients were still possibly able to accomplish following results even after 6 months by taking supplemental food: 1. restoration of extremeties and speech disablement 2. decrease in the need of stroke care 3. promotion of life quality.
