Concerning the Nature of Science
Abstract
This study intends to find ways for implementing the Competence Indicators concerning the nature of science (NOS-CI) in third grade in an elementary school and to reflect the teaching journey upon a teacher’s pedagogical content knowledge concerning NOS-CI (NOS-PCK). Qualitative methods are used. Fourteen students participated in this study. Data collection includes video tapping of classes, interviewing students and the co-teacher, transcriptions of above data and teaching journals.
With the ambition of accomplishing NOS-CI in mind, researcher explored possible teaching strategies including POE, inquiry, Learning Cycle, Problem-based learning and experimentation in order to improve her NOS-PCK for resolving the obstacles and struggling for practicing NOS-CI in the field. Through a series of teaching practices, a sense of appreciation is emerged. There are three levels of practicing NOS-CI, namely “be aware of”, “to appreciate” and “to believe”, for promoting student’s understanding of NOS-CI.
Such an appreciation comes from the joint efforts of a continuous dialogue with research team members, the teaching demonstration by supervisor professor and an on-going process of carrying out ideas restlessly. Such a process will be discussed step by step, stage by stage and indicator by indicator in detail in the thesis.
Recommendations for teaching implementation and further research will be proposed in thesis.
