Integrating children’s books into the social studies classroom makes social studies content relevant. Children’s books not only bring history to real life, but also foster the development of social studies skill. Children’s books facilitate understanding of abstract concepts, and provide students with role models. Children’s books are useful as teaching tool, and there have been a lot of foreign teachers who integrated children’s books in the social studies curriculum. Children’s books present sophisticated social studies concepts in the elementary classroom, and represent wide range of possibilities for providing multiple perspectives on the human experience. As teachers, we may help students learn important social studies content through the study of children’s books. The research subject was at the fifth grade in the elementary school, and the curriculum integration was eight weeks. With other teachers’ helps, we selected eight children’s books which integrated into social study. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Integrating children’s books into the social studies has a stable model which is inclusive of glancing at the plots of books, going to the bottom of the matter, and ruminating on the social issues. 2. The model of integrating children’s books into the social studies should become a virtuous circle, so that the curriculum may be improved. 3. The students are fond of interesting children’s books 4. By reading children’s books, the students enjoy learning the social studies. 5. The integration of social studies and children’s books guides the students thinking deeply about the social issues. 6. The students may not realize the plot clearly because of their reading limit of comprehension 7. The cooperative teachers stood for the integrating curriculum. 8. The researcher got introspection and growth through the integrating curriculum. Above all, the researcher provides several suggestions for the further researches which are about integrating children’s books into social studies. Yi-Fan Pai 白亦方 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 218 zh-TW
