Community Resource Incorporated into Teaching Primary Social Studies
Abstract
The methodology of this study is action research, along with the collection of teaching material through the field work conducted by the researcher. The research period started from August 2005 till June 2006. It is mainly to explore how to incorporate the community resource into the teaching activity for the subject of social studies for the third graders, to explore the problems encountered in the process of teaching activity, and to understand students’ performance and the teacher’s professional growth.
The subject is the students from two classes, all together thirty-seven in number, of the researcher’s. The teaching material is based on the textbook and exercise book of social studies of Hanlin version, vo1. 2, published in February of 2006.
As the teaching activity was carrying on, the researcher timely incorporated local resource corresponding to the learning content of each individual unit. The researcher also applied the method of participant observation, photo taking, recording, note-taking, interviewing, students’ work and the interaction among the teacher and students for ongoing reflection, information collection and data analysis. And the research outcomes have been achieved as below:
1. The teaching material of community resource incorporated into teaching social studies can match students’ everyday life experience.
2. The method of community resource incorporated into teaching social studies is beneficial to students to identify their homeland, be acquainted with their community and to respect diversities of representation.
3. To teach through an action research can improve a teacher’s professional growth.
4. The problems of community resource incorporated into teaching social studies are:
(1) The schedule of field trip is influenced by the weather.
(2) Old community photos are not easy to collect.
(3) Group discussions are often dominated by a few expressive students.
(4) It’s not easy to evaluate students’ emotional aspect in terms of their concerns towards community.
According to the outcomes of the research, four suggestions are here proposed:
1. To build up websites of community teaching information and the database, and to update and enrich the website content as the community’s development goes.
2. The school should open its gate to welcome more enthusiastic people in education to join school education.
3. Children’s learning and growing rely on their parent’s companion.
4. The community needs to utilize various ways of media to allow the community habitants to understand the development of their community.
5. For the following related researches, researchers could expand the research content or probe into various kinds of topics, such as the wetland ecosystem of the lower stream of Shumeichi River in the school district to carry on the research of natural science.
