The first is to examine the effects of gender, gloved condition (bared, wearing one- or two-layer latex gloves) on the exposure time to reach the pain threshold and tolerance (denoted by ETPTh and ETPTo, respectively), as well as the change in hand skin temperature (HST), while hand exposed in 10℃ water. Forty subjects including 20 males and 20 females were recruited. Results indicate the female ETPTh and ETPTo were shorter and about 70% and 54% of that of male, respectively. Wearing gloves increases the HST and prolongs the ETPTh and ETPTo. In the second experiment, there were 10 male and 10 female subjects. A combined nested-factiorial and split-plot design was employed to study the effects of gender, HST (15, 20, or 25℃; whole-plot), gloved condition (bared, wearing one- or two-layer latex gloves; sub-plot), hand part (finger, carpal-metacarpal joint, or palm), and location (nested within the hand part) on pain-pressure threshold and tolerance (denoted by PPTh and PPTo, respectively) of while hand exposed on EASP (external applied surface pressure). The results reveal that males have greater PPTh and PPTo. Both PPTh and PPTo incease while wearing gloves or as HST decreases. The palm has the greatest PPTh and PPTo.
