In order to increase the coverage probability of the IEEE 802.16e system in different wireless scenarios, we utilize the smart antenna system to increase the transmission range and coverage probability. Smart antenna systems can utilize users’ spatial information, such as direction of arrival (DOA), to generate the specific radiation pattern for the desired user and increase the antenna gain. However, due to the mobility of the user, the Doppler shift will cause the smart antenna system to estimate incorrect DOAs of the received signals. Thus, the performance of the smart antenna system which utilizes the DOA based beam-forming algorithm will be deteriorated. In this thesis, we first analyze the coverage probability of IEEE 802.16e system by utilizing the Stanford University Interim (SUI) channel model. Then, we utilize the ML Doppler shift estimation algorithm to estimate and compensate the Doppler shift of the received signals to enhance system performance and coverage probability.
