Summary: | 碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 創作與英語文學研究所 === 94 === The present thesis consists of three chapters with chapter one analyzing Frodo’s heroic quest. Frodo is a child archetype who is tempted by the fire represented by the Ring. He struggles against the desire for the materialistic temptation of fire with the help of Galadriel’s phial. Frodo’s quest begins from the original psychic unity, but he experiences numerous separations in his quest which are induced by his desire for the fire. Chapter two concentrates on Melkor’s heroic quest in contrast to Frodo’s. Melkor is corrupted by his desire for fire and becomes a fallen hero. He produces different kinds of monsters that demolish Middle-earth, and his lies cause division among the Elves and Valar. Since the fire is the source of light, to lose fire is to lose light. Melkor finally loses his possession of the light of Silmarils, and he loses his physical body forever. He only exists as a shadow in human minds, waiting for a change to wield its evil influence. The third chapter explores Tolkien’s heroic quest to pursue the Truth of Light by his sub-creation. It explicates Tolkien’s linguistic and philosophic theory in accordance with Barfield and Jung’s theories.
