Taiwan government has focused on the application of porous materials in pavement for the past few years. The advantage of this is the modification of climate, the reduction of traffic noise, and the conservation of water resources. The Public Construction Commission of Executive Yuan and the ChiaYi County Transportation Bureau selected a parking lot outside National Chung-Zhen University as one of the permeable pavement demonstration project sites. The purpose of the demonstration project is to evaluate the application of permeable pavement in ChiaYi area.
The thesis is based on the results of the National Chung-Zhen University demonstration project. Researches find that it is difficult to satisfy both permeability and bearing capacity design requirements based on economic and safety considerations. It is also found that an adjustment surface layer of 3cm thick can improve runway deformation resisting capability by 50%. This improvement has been proved to be true by monitoring for one year when only passenger car transportations are allowed. In the ground temperature reduction study, turf blocks are found to be most effective. It can lower ground temperature by 10 degree Celsius comparing with traditional concrete pavement. It also has the highest rate of temperature reduction. However, permeable asphalt concrete pavement shows similar temperature with dense graded asphalt concrete pavement. This may due to its black color which absorbs heat more rapidly. In the site water conservation issue, it is found that as the site permeability coefficient and void both meet design requirements the infiltration coefficient can be kept at 20.43%, which shows a much better ability of water conservation than traditional pavement.
Research findings suggest that in runway applications a 3 cm thick layer of permeable asphalt concrete be applied to improve bearing and water conservation capability as well as to reduce ground temperature. As the living environment is concerned, turf blocks are suggested to replace traditional pavement. It is hoped that this thesis can provide references for spread and feasibility study of permeable pavement.
