Influenced by heavy social vicissitude at that time, British composers and poets start to compose works with intensely personal style. By using composer Benjamin Britten’s song cycle On This Island, op.11 as an example, this thesis will discuss composer and poet’s artistic concepts, as well as provide an interpretation based on the traditional and modern coloration and singing skills. There are six chapters in this thesis. In the beginning, the influence of English social vicissitude on music and poems is discussed briefly. Background of composers and poets will be described. Further, the historical evolution and characteristics of coloration vocal skills will be analyzed, which leads to the ample explanation of the unity of music and poems. Moreover, analysis and interpretation are referred to composers’ recording performed by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears and the author’s personal performing experience. Hopefully, this study can offer readers a reference for studying and performing the modern British art songs. Mei-fung Kang 康美鳳 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 58 zh-TW
