Taiwan’s IC industry has a complete value adding chain: IC design, fabrication, assembly and testing. There exists clustering effect and economy-of-scale effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the business strategy of Taiwan’s IC assembly and testing industry.
Relevant literatures were reviewed to identify the theoretical basis of this study. Current status and future trend of Taiwan’s IC assembly and testing industry were summarized. Industry experts were interviewed to provide input to the Strategic Matrix Analysis to find out the strategy of the case company. The value-chain of the case company and the KSFs (Key Successful Factors) of Taiwan’s IC assembly and testing industry were reported.
A survey of industry experts summarized 51 strategic factors of importance to IC assembly and testing industry. Through Strategic Matrix analysis, 17 “very important” strategic factors were found for the case company. The case company was found insufficiently prepared on three items. The first one is assurance of quality, the second one is economy-of-scale, and the third one is the application of information technology. Improvement suggestions were given to the case company in an attempt to improve its competitiveness.
