Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 外國語文學系 === 94 === We explore the relationships between lexical meaning, conceptual thought, and the external reality in terms of their philosophical foundations and how they are manifested crosslinguistically, largely using data from Mandarin Chinese and English. This investigation leads us to a conception of lexical meaning that combines Saussurean, Quinean, and Chomskian perspectives. Both linguistic and non-linguistic concepts and their lexical correlates are studied in this context. The final outcome of the discussion is a model of lexical meaning incorporating four levels, namely: grammaticalized meaning, core meaning, flexible meaning, and indeterminate meaning.
