However, in recent years, due to the availability of various sophisticated 2D image processing software and rapid tooling techniques, it can be made by rapid prototyping through the use of image-3D relief conversion software. One can use 2D image data to rapidly produce 3D relief, creating his personal styled products and art works. This dissertation demonstrates a software-hardware integration technique of rapid prototyping. BMP format images can be processed by this new developed software. Different levels of darkness are shown on its grey-level which is also used to represent information of 3D surface by defining the height of each pixel. Establish the model slicing algorithm to obtain each plane of cross section, and these data will be transferred to rapid prototyping for relief manufacturing. The pixels of colored slices can also be found by comparing the colors of the pixels which will further allow colorful 3D relief fabrication. Visual C++ and OpenGL are used to perform the calculation. Hardware verification has also been done by using 3D printer. The results of the verification of the software and hardware integration show the relief can be made successfully, and the colorful relief software is also established to be verified in the future.
