Electronic resources (ER) is increasingly important in the library service nowadays. Therefore, how to promote library instruction for ER becomes an essential research issue. The purpose of this research is to acquire the state and to understand the librarians’ opinions of library instruction for ER in academic libraries in Taiwan by the questionnaire survey method.
Major findings of this research are as following: (1) Most of libraries thought already achieved the objective of library instruction for ER; (2) The content and method of library instruction for ER gave consideration to both traditional and digitalized resources and services; (3) There were significant differences on the state of instruction for ER in “instruction objective”, “resource types”, “teaching modes”, “activity ways” and “promotion materials” due to different types of libraries; (4) The recognition of most librarians about the important topics of library instruction for ER was significant; (5) There were significant differences on librarians’ recognition of instruction for ER in “educational materials” due to different types of libraries; (6) The working experiences (work years) of librarians caused significant differences on recognition of instruction objectives; (7) The course name of library instruction for ER was various; (8) The poor learning motivation of readers was the most frequent encountering problem.
The suggestions based on the conclusion of research include: (1) Investigate and analyze readers’ needs before implementing any library instruction programs; (2) Improve readers’ motive to participate in ER library instruction; (3) The role of teacher on ER library instruction was important; (4) Promote and regard to the “five information literacy competencies” of ACRL to every ER library instruction programs; (5) Strengthen “networked information resources” instruction; (6) The ER library instruction should integrate with traditional library service; (7) Made the good use of “e-mail”; (8) Obtain the opportunities to include library instruction as formal course program in universities; (9) The evaluation was needed; (10) The problem of insufficient staffs and lack of knowledge of librarians’ background majors should be emphasized; (11) Construct a self-learning educational network system of ER.
