Therefore, rural settlements face many development limitations and problems. Meanwhile, economic development has created conflicts and separation between traditional and modern concepts. Villagers have already recognized that if only they develop their own local property, they can cope with these transformation pressures. Local historical spaces are a collective memory for people and communities, and the villagers make use of this “resource”. That is, we can determine how to derive the perfect relationship between community people and historical assets; this is an essential development potential for the future transformation of rural settlements in Taiwan. This study intends to review the special qualities of local historical spaces and existing vitality of villagers from the standpoint of village traditional and cultural property, and use of the valuable viewpoint of reutilization, that is, using traditional elements and characteristics of rural settlements to achieve the development goals. The study also in tends to search operational principles and strategies for storing, transforming, and revitalizing historical spaces via an integrated development process through the users (villagers) participation. The cultural content of the villagers shall be relied on in driving the benefits of future transformations of rural settlements. In addition, the study also tries to achieve sustainable development by reutilizing rural settlement historical spaces. Liu, Chien-Zer Chang, Shu-Chun 劉健哲 張淑君 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 154 zh-TW
