Description
Summary:碩士 === 美和技術學院 === 健康照護研究所 === 94 === The unrecognized symptoms of osteoporosis are usually on the first stage of osteoporosis. When the consequent fracture occurred, it may result in serious problems and may influence family, society, and individual’s quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations among demographic information, disease characteristics, social support, and quality of life of patients with osteoporosis. A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. One hundred and sixty one participants were convenience sampling and structural questionnaires were used to collect data. Participants were recruited from Orthopedics outpatient and family medicine department of four teaching hospitals in Taichung. Inclusion criteria included: 1) female of age 20 or above; 2) Mandarin or Taiwanese spoken; 3) the test of density for osteoporosis as T< -2.5 or the fracture of participants not caused by external force or diagnosed as osteoporosis by a physician. Measures included the demographic information, disease characteristics, the pain scale, the Barthel’s daily living of activity, the social support, and the SF-36 General Health Survey. Results revealed appraisal support as the highest score of social support for participants. The total scores of quality of life for osteoporosis patients were 41.8 that were lower than the scores of general Americans in 1988. The daily living activity and social support were positively related to quality of life of mandarin patients. The daily living activity of participants would explain 43.4% variance on their quality of life. The results may help healthcare professionals to use social support and promote quality of life for osteoporosis patients.
