Summary: | 碩士 === 銘傳大學 === 設計管理研究所碩士在職專班 === 94 === This study investigated the effects of icons’ characteristics on searching performance and subjective preference. The between-subjects design had repeated observations on visual search performance which contained search time and error rate. This research included four experiments. In the first experiment, effects of the width of line of icon’s frame and the shape of icon and color combination of text/background on search time were investigated. Results showed that the color combination of figure/ground (white/yellow, white/blue, black/red, black/yellow, black/blue), the target shape of circle, and the 3-pixel of lines of target’s frame all improved the visual-searching performance. In addition, the color combinations of figure/ground (white/blue, white/ yellow, red / yellow, black/red) could decrease the searching performance of error rate.
In the second experiment, effects of visual task icon’s characteristics on searching performance were studied. As a result, the visual task icons were found that they could significantly affect the searching time. The shortest searching time happened when the color combination of icon/background was white/yellow and the lower error rate was seen when the color combination of icon/background was black/red. However, the area ratio of figures occupied in the icons had no significant impact on the searching time.
In the third experiment, effects of dynamic display of icons on searching performance were evaluated. Results showed that the shortest searching time and smallest error rate happened when the color combination of icon/background was black/red. Dynamic-displaying design also improved users’ searching performance. The smallest error rate was seen when the lines of target’s frame were dynamic-displaying.
In the last experiment, icons were redesigned based on the results of the aforementioned experiments for subjective preference test. Results showed that examinees’ visual-searching performance was changed. Examinees still preferred the combination of figure/ground (black/red), but changed their preference in the others. Results also showed that people with aesthetic background had a faster searching speed. To sum up, this study could provide valuable information and guidance to web designers to improve the visual-searching performance of web designs.
