As the shortest one of Thirteen Classics of Confucian, Filial Piety lays significant influence on Chinese culture and politics and is also criticized for some of its viewpoints. In addition, the authenticity and edition issue are still disputed. The most distinct characteristic of this work is its close relation with political affairs, which illustrates Confucian』s urgent desire of being involved into states affairs.
In this work, Filial Piety Governance was originally put forward. The author tried to apply Filial Piety Governance into state affairs through many approaches including moral education, filial piety–oriented legislation and so on.
What should be paid attention to is although Filial Piety was labeled as Confucian, views of some other schools were still included in this work. Especially, the Regulation-oriented Filial Piety Governance was greatly popular to the ruler class. What』s more, the idea of Loyalty in this work was highly advocated by the rulers since its advantages to their governing.
So, Filial Piety had been awfully propagandized and honored by the ruler class ever since Han Dynasty.
While researching the Filial Piety, I am liable to have another study on its contemporary sense in order to gain better knowledge of its value today.
This paper is divided into six chapters, the first one is the Introduction. Research intentions, motives, themes, scopes, methodology and limiting factors will be included. In the 2nd Chapter, I intend to give a brief introduction and comb to this work. To demonstrate its wide incidence, I will summarize its status in Confucian system and its far-reaching influence through Chinese ancient dynasties.
I will detailedly discuss the idea of Filial Piety Governance in the 3rd Chapter and wish to give an overview of its foundations and sources. Then, the main part of theory and practice will be discussed. Regulation-oriented Filial Piety Governance and the idea of Loyalty will be paid more attention.
After the discussion of Filial Piety Governance, I believe a summary of the origin and evolvement of Filial Piety is essential in my paper as they compose the base of Filial Piety Governance. So in the 4th Chapter, social context of its origin, theoretical sources, characters, practice and sense of filial piety will be discussed one by one.
A review of traditional filial piety will be given in the 5th Chapter. I shall conclude its inconsistency and summarize the criticism and arguments since 1919. After that, I want to analyze the possibility and approach of the application of filial piety in modern times. At last, some limiting factors will also be attached.
Ultimately, I will educe the conclusion of this paper and give an expectation of its contemporary application
