This thesis is aimed to study the dynamic behavior of tower-pier system subject to various external loads. Rigid body motions are considered which include horizontal displacement), vertical displacement, rotational angle of tower-pier system and horizontal displacement of cable. Further the application of passive and active tuned mass dampers (TMD) to vibration suppression of tower-pier system is conducted. The equations of motions of tower-pier system, without and with TMD, are derived first and then expressed in state space form. The dynamic responses of tower-pier system subject to free vibrations and various external forces such as unit step forcing, harmonic forcing and El Centro ground acceleration, are analyzed via Runge-Kutta scheme. Both passive and active control are adopted in the vibration suppression synthesis, wherein optimal control and fuzzy control are involved. It is found that the soil damping leads to significant influence on the dynamic responses of tower-pier system. Passive TMD and active TMD are both effectively applicable to vibration alleviation of tower-pier system under appropriate selection of TMD parameters, weighting matrices, membership functions and rule banks.
