Three categories of VOD techniques have been proposed in the literature: True VOD, Near VOD, and Unified VOD. Although VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) functionality is a desired feature, it is not easy to implement fast forward functionality on some VOD systems. The key to successfully implementing fast forward resides in the ability of the server to deliver the video data to the client buffer in time. In this paper, we propose a broadcast method on unified VOD architecture to implement the fast forward functionality where bandwidth requirement on the client side is at most 3 times of the playback rate.
