One of the examples is that the new role of physician assistant, which is created to address the issue of lowering cost versus the need for adequate and timely care. However, in 2004, the legislators officially rejected the Medical Service Act Revision, which include the chapter of physician assistant. Their relegation to the edges of law, the seriousness of their responsibilities and lack of supporting system inspired the research. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between role stress and job satisfaction among physician assistants, and to identify predictive indicators of job satisfaction. Method Twenty-one hospitals in Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas were included in this study using a purposive sampling method. Self-administered questionnaire were mailed to the physician assistants at these hospitals. The response rate of our questionnaire was 71.2% (178 valid response out of a total of 250 sent). SPSS 10.0 for Windows Chinese version was used for statistical analyses. Descriptive analyses, reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise linear regression were used to induce the major research findings. Conclusion 1.The strongest role stress felt by the physician assistants was “qualitative overload”, while “compensation and benefits” was significantly related to job dissatisfaction. 2.Physician assistants who did not receive training tended to have higher role stress than their counterparts. Role stress due to role conflict and quantitative overload were higher among physician assistants in nursing management than their counterparts. Physician assistants under the supervision of medical department tended to have the highest role stress of qualitative overload. Physician assistants under the supervision of both administrative and medical departments tended to have the highest satisfaction level in terms of compensation and benefits. 3.Physician assistants at regional hospitals tended to have higher role stress than their counterparts; whereas, physician assistants at medical centers tended to have higher job satisfaction level than their counterparts. 4.The correlation between role stress and job satisfaction among physician assistants was significant, but the level ranked moderate to low. 5.Role ambiguity, role conflict and years of experience in physician assistant have negative predictive effects on job satisfaction; whereas, monthly compensation have a positive predictive effect on job satisfaction.
