The muscle strength of quadriceps femoralis muscle was measured with repeat manual muscle testing from postoperative day 1 to 7. All data was analyzed using SPSS 11.5 computer programs and Statistical Analysis System (SAS) for statistical analysis. Results showed a significant relationship between muscle strength recovery and post operation days after allowing demography, physiology, operation, and care factors . At 72 hours after operation, the muscular strength was up to the threshold of functional activity (score: 3 points ; fair). Muscle strength improved maximally in postoperative days 2, 3, 4, and 7. The muscle strength had recovered to 85% of normal value in postoperative day 7. There are other factors associated with muscle strength, including pain and operative site. When the pain intensified, muscle strength was reduced. The recovery of muscle strength decreased 1.6 percent when pain level increased every 10 percent. During all operative sites, maximal muscle strength was noted in patients who underwent femoral reduction, and the minimum noted in who underwent total knee replacement. The recovery of muscle strength after total knee replacement is 6.4 percent less than that after femoral reduction. The results showed muscle strength reached a stable status at 96 hours postoperatively. This is the proper time of discharge. The results should be offered to DRG (Diagnostic Related Groups) for consideration. 簡姿娟 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 63 zh-TW
