Summary: | 碩士 === 輔英科技大學 === 護理系碩士班 === 94 === The rapid growth of elderly population aged 65 and older and the increase on their average life expectancy have caused a greater number of elderly population with chronic diseases and functional deterioration. Their dependence and care demands thus are increasing. Numerous Problems associated with care arised, especially inappropriate verbal and non-verbal behaviors of their caregivers, because psychological elder abuse behavior, unlike the obvious physical abuse, is often hidden and has been neglected. Yet, it is commonly existed among caregivers of elder people. In Taiwan, no instruments to measure such behaviors, therefore, the development and psychometric testing of the Caregiver Psychological Elder Abuse Behavior scale (CPEAB) became crucial for health care system when planning care.
The initial items of this scale were developed through thoughtful literature review and a focused interview. The research participants included 113 nurses and nurse aides from several registered long term care facilities and nursing homes in Kaohsiung and Pintung counties. The instrument was a self reported Likert scale with each 4 points and total score range was 20 points to 80 points, higher score indicated higher level of psychological elder abuse behavior. The content validity index (CVI) of .95 was established through expert-panel eva1uation. The significant relationships between the CPEAB and Work Stress Inventory(WSI)and Personal Resource Questionnaire(PRQ)(p<.01, .05) provided confirmation of criterion-related validity. The construct validity was determined through factor analysis, three factors were extracted total variance explained 64%. The high internal consistency and test-retest agreement were also supported by Cronbach’s alpha of .83 and Inter-class correlation (ICC.8508, p< .01).
Elderly people may experience lower self value when facing mistreatment, may perceive themselves as of burden for their family and society. Especially, the institutionalized elderly may suffer from lack of belonging and hopelessness, thus resulting in a grater negative effect on their mental and physical health. So, the caregiver psychological elder abuse Scale(CPEAB)develop is very important.
We concluded that the CPEAB appeared to be a useful tool, providing reliable and valid screening data to help determine caregiver psychological elder abuse behavior, as well as in research environments. The Caregiver Psychological Elder Abuse Behavior scale(CPEAB) developed in this study will alert the caregivers and promote societal attention toward elderly problems. The final goal will prevent the elderly people from being abused.
