The test results showed that the improvement with alignments of model stone columns was better than the improvement with purely an increase in the improved area ratio. Under the condition of the same stone column diameter, the improved coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction did not rise with the increase of the stone columns installed. If stone columns were installed in loading concentrated locations, the improvement of the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction was better. If stone columns were installed in non reaction concentrated locations, the effect of the improvement was limited.
