The‘Hun-tun’(chaos)theme is the most important concept of Taoism. The purpose of this research is to prove the following hypothesis, i.e. there is an intimate relationship between the Taoist Hun-tun theme and artificial mountain design of Chiang-nan private garden. This study intends to prove the above-mentioned hypothesis by way of the investigation of the contents of Chinese Classics (such as I Ching, Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, etc.)so as to explicate the Hun-tun theory and traditional Symbolism, both of which are then compared with artificial mountain design theory of traditional Chinese garden and are finally verified by a number of artificial mountain examples in extant Chiang-nan private gardens.
