Numbers of people, their age, and selections of escape routes in building will cause different flow speed of groups during the disaster. This research was based on junior high school in Taichung city. Four representative junior high schools were selected, the author with some helpers to do the site investigations, building dimension, layout, escape route measurements, and questionnaire interviews. School’s current conditions and simulation of group escaping patterns under fire were measured. From the measured time, we calculated the students’ escaping speed and used the statistical regression to analyze them to be usable data. These results were then applied to the theoretical fire escaping calculations formula evaluations and further explored the interactions between people’s characteristics and the required escaping times. The results included average speed of horizontal movements, vertical movements, and the waiting time in group escaping movement through narrow gate under critical conditions. The horizontal movement speeds in average are 1.30m/s, 1.01m/s, and 0.92m/s for junior high school first grade, second grade and third grade students respectively. The vertical movement speed in average are 0.83m/s, 0.88m/s, and 0.87m/s for first grade, second grader, and third grade students respectively. These results were then taken into the domestic fire escaping formulas and compared with the measured whole escaping time. From the comparison, we noticed the difference in escaping time from room and from a story is small. But from whole building, we calculated time from fire escaping formulas is larger than measured time. The biggest different time came from the item - students go through the egress is from 4.9 to 33.3 seconds. From the result, we can stipulate a required fire escaping times in school’s buildings and providing relative improvements for establishing design guidelines for junior high schools.
