The chemical structure and composition of the volatility substance was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Liquid Chromatography-Mass (LC-MS), respectively. The weight loss of epoxy resin was studied by Thermogravimetric (TGA). For IR and LC-MS spectra, no composition change was found for volatility substance of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-Phosphaphenanthrene- 10-oxide (DOPO) before and after heating at 130 ℃. In comparison with the result of TGA, the weight loss after heating at 130 ℃ was due to the evaporation of water and DOPO. However, the volatility substances were mainly of DMF and acetone after heating at 185 ℃.as measured by FTIR and LC-MS, which caused the weight loss shown by TGA. Influences of additives such as Polypyrrole (PPy) and PPy/clay on the thermal stability of epoxy resin were also studied. The ring open reaction between Amine group and epoxy group was confirmed as measured by IR. The highest of Tg and ΔH were obtained when the additive content was 2.5 wt% as analyzed by DSC. The anti-combustion capability of the composites was also increased with the addition of PPy as shown by the limit oxygen index (LOI) test.
