Urban form is a function of land-use patterns, trips and economic activities, and it is often hypothesized that changing urban form can result in changes in energy consumption. Using Co-Plot, an innovative multivariate statistical technique, this study crystallizes some of the relationships between urban form and energy consumption in 23 Taiwan cities and counties. This study specifically explores the relevance of compact city concept and energy consumption. According to the result of the empirical analysis, we find that excessively high urban density and land mixed-use will cause positive effects to the energy consumption. Promoting urban economy development will cause positive effects to the energy consumption. Promotes the mass transit system develops and reduces personal transportation will be helpful to reducing the urban energy consumption. This study shows the desire to promote the urban density as well as the land mixed-use might towards urban form of multi-cores and decentralized concentration pattern could lead to even lower urban energy consumption.
