Cumulative evidences showed that this parasite can survive as a pseudocystic stage in external environment ubder different stress conditions and still infectious. This experiment investigated the protein expression patterns of T. vaginalis grow in normal and cold stress conditions (37℃ and 4℃) by using 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) in order to understand how this parasite can survive at a critical temperature. Our results showed that enzymes related to energy production such as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD) and fructose 1-, 6-biphosphate aldolase (FBPA) were expressed at a higher level under cold stress condition. The stress responsible proteins heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and thiol peroxidase (Tpx) also have a similar expression pattern. One interesting observation is detoxification enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) which showed high mRNA expression in the Expressed Sequence Tags (EST) library but low protein expression level at low temperature. This observation indicated that importance of post transcriptional modification of mRNA in the regulation of protein expression. The present study also showed selective expression of members in multiple protein families such as malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and HSP70 in which only specific kind of isoforms are highly expressed at low temperature.
