Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 電訊傳播研究所 === 94 === The background of this research is about the trend in television talk show production on astrology and fortune-telling since the year 2001. Television talk shows on astrology and fortune-telling are still so popular today that many related commercial products are promoted in the market. This study focuses on a case study, the most famous astrology and fortune-telling television program—Lucky Strike—in the approach of cultural studies.
The research questions of this study are described in the following: (1) discuss whether or not astrology and fortune-telling talk shows illustrate enough to form a specific genre by relating academic studies and the discussion of television theory, (2) history background of astrology and fortune-telling television programs, (3) define the location of Lucky Strike and the techniques of reproduction on astrology and fortune-telling by analyzing specific program texts, and (4) understand how those so-called “experts of astrology and fortune-telling” make up their authority.
The main finding of this study is: “it is not about fortune-telling in fortune-telling television program.” The main ambition of Lucky Strike is not fortune-telling. The truth is they never tell fortunes about the audience or the artists they invite. The main theme here can be defined in two parts: to discuss “sex/gender subjects” and to “voyeur the celebrities” by astrology and fortune-telling. These two entertainment strategy entice audiences and makes the program popular.
