A video transition usually contains no meaningful information about the video sequence, so the first step of video indexing/retrieval is to segment a video sequence into shots. Among various types of gradual transitions, the dissolve-type transition is considered the most common one and it is difficult to detect. The behavior of a dissolve transition is very easily confused with camera or object motions. In this study, we propose a new motion-tolerant dissolve detection algorithm that can correctly distinguish dissolve transitions from local/global motions. We use a natural dissolve transition model to detect the dissolve transition. We calculate the lengths of successive monotonously increasing/decreasing pixels in each frame respectively as the weights, and then we multiply them by cumulated differences and get a WSAD value. If the value exceeds the threshold, we will check whether the slope after the peak is steep enough. If it is, we declare there is a dissolve transition.
