Regardless of the various definitions of Knowledge economy provided by scholars, it is, in essence, a combination of knowledge and economy. Academic institutes and industries are the two typical representations of knowledge and economy, respectively. As a result, how to enhance the cooperation of schools and industry has long been an important policy for governments around the world. This policy is particularly important for Taiwan, due to her small & medium enterprises amounting to over 97% of the total industry. With the above concept in mind, a model, including the concepts of social capital, innovation climate, innovation ability, dynamic capabilities and performance was constructed and examined in this study. A case study was made for our qualitative analyses. Also, a quantitative study was conducted to 119 universities through questionnaires for hypotheses testing. The universities under survey were confined to those either have a research center or a cooperative office at school. One of the important findings derived from the analysis of 80 valid questionnaires revealed that both resource bases and dynamic capabilities played an important role on the quantity of schools’ research performance. However, a longitudinal study is recommended as far as the effects of these two factors on research quality are concerned. After the tests of hypotheses of this study, a statistical method of Cluster Analysis has further been applied to classify the universities into three groups, namely, active research schools, business cooperative schools and traditional schools. The active research group, in total of 13 schools, served as a standard for performance improvements to the other two groups. Some of the theoretical contributions this research include: 1) An integrated model proposed based on the theories of business for school administration; 2) A large scale investigation of all universities in Taiwan to ensure the feasibility of the model study; 3) A complement to previous studies that mainly focused on general discussions, rather than provide universities with a specific measure to improve their research performance. In addition, we believed, in practice, that the results of this study can not only upgrade the overall research performance of the universities, but enable them to offer more help to the small & medium enterprises in Taiwan for their competitive abilities in international markets. At the end of this study, the limitation in this study was presented, and three major directions for future studies were suggested. Yung-Ching, Ho 何雍慶 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 163 zh-TW
