(1978) developed Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), DEA has been frequently used for measure the relative efficiencies of many profit and non-profit organizations, such as hospitals, universities and banks. However, none of previous research on DEA has provided researchers a comprehensive review of DEA on its evolution from 1996-2005, based upon selected journal articles. Therefore, it is important for this study to conduct a meta study of DEA in fulfill such a need. In this paper, a total of 900 DEA academic articles were selected from OR and non-OR related journals for a period 1996 through 2005. The purpose of this study is three-fold: (1) to map the evolution of DEA; (2) to present a summary of DEA application areas; and (3) to assess research productivity on DEA by researcher, institution, department and country. Results of this study show that (1) 20 DEA theoretical areas are identified, parametric & nonparametric is the most researcher studied method; (2) banking is the most application areas, followed by health care area; and (3) Joe Zhu, Toshiyuki Sueyoshi and Gholam R. Jahanshahloo are the first three productive researchers in publishing DEA research; University of Texas and Department of Mathematics in Islamic Azad University are in the leading research positions; USA is the most dominant country in publishing DEA research.
