碩士 === 臺北市立師範學院 === 視覺藝術研究所 === 94 === Abstract
Keyword: create, grid, image
If you look carefully, you will easily find that grids are all over our surroundings. I started to notice the grids, because they could be made into artist works, even if they are usually neglected.
The original function of grids was to help creators to position objects on scripts. Grids used to be a supplementary tool, but they became leading characters in the twentieth century. They not only possess symbolic meanings, but they are the media themselves. Grids can be divided into centripetal styles and centrifugal styles. Most grids appear repeatedly in the pictures as centripetal function, while few centrifugal works emphasize the fragments by contrasting the frames and grids.
In the late Modernism grids obtain the style of computer arts, which put emphasis on the regularity of mechanism, with less humane elements. The grids that separate the pictures are still adopted by modern artists. Only when we work hard that we can give the grids new facets.
The thesis is more of a creative essay, consisting of five chapters: introduction, discussion of grid, depicting personal philosophy, description of personal works, and the final conclusion.
The framework of the thesis is as follows:
Chapter 1. This is the introduction chapter, explaining personal research motivation, purpose, approaches, limitation and definitions of terms.
Chapter 2. This chapter is about the primitive function, basic character and arrayal of grid. Grids are used in artistic works as symbols, thus, the author research on several artists’ works concerning the theme: Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse and J. Albers.
Chapter 3. The chapter is about the author’s own ideas and practice of creation, including personal philosophy, the process and techniques of creation.
Chapter 4. This chapter describes the author’s 21 personal visionary works about grid.
Chapter 5. This is the conclusion chapter. The main theme of the thesis is grid. The author will continue creating on the same topic.
