The qualitative research methodology was utilized, with a class of 29 students of the Hsin-Hsin (alias) Elementary School in Taipei as research subjects involved in this study. The researcher first investigated related literature of the origin history and the contents of CM. The researcher-developed instructional plan, curriculum contents and activities for suiting 5th-graders’ music ability were mainly based on the principles and teaching strategies of CM. The empirical teaching study consisted of 22 classes from the first semester of the 93 Academic year, dating from October 19 to January 7 that took 12 weeks. Through analysis of the observation notes, reflection notes, feedback of students’ work sheets, the replications of observation tables, and the interview notes collected, the researcher obtain the qualitative results of this study. Major findings of this study are stated as follows: (1) The CM curriculum design involved music elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, intensity, timbre, form, and context, width of music materials, and listening is the most important music experiences developed analysis, performance and composition to achieve comprehensive music learning. (2) The result of analysis instruction is that students truly acquired the understanding of music and improved their music discrimination ability through the learning of the musical contexts and the perception of music elements. (3) The result of performance instruction is that students were pleased and excited in the instruction, but their performance competence just improved little and have sufficient time to do repetitive practice so that it could obtain more effect. (4) The result of composition instruction is positive to students’ composition competence, and stimulated their creative thinking in the music field. The suggestions of this study contained music curriculum design should have the deep learning of music elements, using more music materials, provide music-exploring chance, strengthen the mastery of skills, and be based on the principle “Music is sound” to the meaningful learning. Music teachers also could take flexible of teaching strategy, emphasize the attitude of students in the music learning, stressed the main point of teaching is listening, and utilizing the resources in our community and schools. And further research in the future could have longer time to get into the CM teaching, use various research methodologies, develop music teaching to other educational level or chorus, band and orchestra, and apply CM to unite other curriculum.
