A survey was conducted in the 13 NOU local centers in Taiwan. The survey has chosen those students who registered for fall of 2003 during the 05/08/2004 — 06/13/2004 period. We tried to gather information on how the NOU students know and think about the academic situation of higher education in mainland China. The issues under investigation include the willingness to attend schools in China, the understanding of China’s policy on degree recognition, and accessibility of information, etc. The analysis of this survey reveals valuable result for the planning and development of our own education system. Major conclusions of this research are summarized below : 1.Most NOU students think positively on the policy of degree recognition in mainland China. 2.Political and language issues are two major factors that influence the decision of NOU students to attend schools in China. 3.Taiwan has specific regulations to govern how the foreign degrees are recognized. However, the regions under China’s governing are regulated by special laws. 4.The interaction between NOU students and information from China depends largely on each student’s individual characteristics.
