Due to the rampant tectonic plate movements and active geological movements, the island of Taiwan has been blessed with an abundance of natural resources. The so-called “Maifanshih” is of a “Porphyrtic hornblende andesite”, and has been a renowned unique stone to provide medicinal yield in ancient China. The Maifanshih sold in the market is mainly in granule configuration, which can be used for ionic exchange, refrigerator deodorization and aquarium tank water purification, and offers extensive applications due to its odor absorption, water purification, ionic exchange and mineral diffusion properties. Notwithstanding, the pulverized Maifanshih is also used as cosmetic additive, it is a kind of functional mineral with economic value. Hence, how to promote the Maifanshih’s market demand, standardize the product specification, and strengthen consumer confidence have become a crucial task in the promotion of Maifanshih. A survey by the M.O.E.A. Department of Mines polling more than twenty sites, where Maifanshih is quarried throughout Hualien County and Taitung County, had yielded the finding that samples derived from six sampling sites contains the content of Montmorillonite. Mineralogy publications describe the Maifanshih as whitish minerals, largely containing andesine with traces of albite, K-plagioclase, oligocacse, bytownite, labradorite and anorthite; and black minerals, primarily comprising of ferromagnesian minerals, predominantly of amphibole and hypersthene. It has also been further confirmed that Maifanshih containing Montmorillonite can help to neutralize water’s pH level, with an adjustable propensity approximatly between pH 0.1 and 0.4.The pulverized Maifanshih in finer granules is found to be more prone to adjust water pH to alkalinity. Maifanshih is classified as an intermediate rock, and its key compositions contain approximately 61-71% of SiO2, 14-19% of Al2O3, and a typical “Porphyrtic hornblende andesite” derived from weathering or thermal metasomatism. This study aims to further examine Manfanshih’s ionic exchange characteristics. Based on the ionic exchange theory and absorption isotherm theory, the ion exchange behaviors of Maifanshih were evaluated by varying the diameters of pulverized Maifanshih powder, pH of solution and the effect of surface electric charge on the adsorption of heavy metal, specifically lead. The Maifanshih’s heavy metal (lead) bonding capacity and its bonding mechanism were illustrated. Through the understanding of the relevant mechanism of Maifanshih, it is anticipated that further exploration and some of the bottlenecks in the local promotion of Maifanshih can be surpassed. The study also presents a Maifanshih development, utilization and campaigning strategy in order to justify the Maifanshih mineral product will become a special domestic mineral resources in the near future.
