It is caused by the anaerobic fermentation via lactic acid bacteria converting water soluble carbohydrates in forages into organic acids, mainly lactic acid. The purposes of this research were to study the effects of inoculating with Lactobacillus buchneri and L. plantarum alone or combination of the two bacteria on the fermentation and aerobic stability of corn silages. Treatments were control, inoculating with L. buchneri and L. plantarum alone and combination of the two bacteria. The silage was fermented well and the pH value was above 3.7 after 90 days ensiling. According to the results, the silages inoculated with L. plantarum and without inoculation had higher pH values (p< 0.05) than did the others. The silage inoculated with L. plantarum had the highest concentration of lactic acid (p< 0.05), while that inoculated L. buchneri had highest concentration of acetic acid (p< 0.05). The treatment without inoculation produced higher concentration of ammonia nitrogen in silage then the others(p< 0.05). The silage inoculated with L. buchneri had the smallest numbers of yeasts and increased after exposing to air for 5 days, while that without inoculation had the largest numbers of yeasts and increased (p<0.05). The treatment inoculated with L. buchneri produced higher concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid than did the others and produced the lowest concentration of ammonia nitrogen (p<0.05). The treatment without inoculation had the highest concentration of propionic acid, butyric acid and ammonia nitrogen (p< 0.05). The treatment inoculated with L. buchneri, L. plantarum alone and a combination of the two bacteria were effective methods for making corn silage with high quality. Inoculation with L. buchneri is an effective method for improving the aerobic stability of corn silages and it may be an alternative to other antifungal additives.
