More recently, ecotourism is getting more and more popular on this island. In the past, the issues on nuclear waste and tourism development ever caused great controversy here. Some aborigines on this island, Ya-Mei people, are therefore cautious about such ecotourism development. The worries include not being able to take part in the overall planning process or not being able to enjoy the benefits this development could bring. To build a feasible operational model that could be accepted by both the government and the local society in Lanyu is therefore essential and is the major objective of this study. Looking back into the history of Lanyu's development, it is full of impacts and traces of national policies. Usually, ecotourism is tightly coupled to local society. With national support, local residents in Lanyu still need to engage more in activities to preserve and promote national resources and local cultures. One study through personal engagement and interviews with local people shows that they are mostly interested in taking part in the ecotourism development. However, such a development still faces quite a lot of challenges. For example, the government's policy is unclear, the Ya-Mei traditional culture may not value such a development, and the necessary infrastructure is not adequate yet. This study reveals that Lanyu indeed has the potential to become a popular ecotourism island. In the early stage, the government and the local society, however, should be more active in building an operational model that could lead to long-lasting development and prosper in Lanyu. Specific suggestions include the following two parts; one for the government, and the other for the local society. (1)The government part. The government should help Lanyu to establish a national ecotourism park with a clear policy on its functions and purposes. Resolve the nuclear waste issue effectively. Cultivate local talents to join the administration and management of this national park. (2)The local society part. The local residents should elevate their overall knowledge and management skills through taking courses, show their passing for preserving their local cultures and resources, unify together as one through overall society planning, so that they can gain the most through communication to reach a win-win situation. This study also suggests that the government should invite some third-party organizations to join this development so that the overall resources can be integrated nicely. Eventually, the ecotourism industry should be handed over to local Ya-Mei people and run by local society itself. 【Keywords】Lanyu. Aborigines Ecotourism.
