As the first evening newspaper, it has struggled out through the hard times for the sake of Taiwan’s democracy and has been growing stronger and stronger with the development of democracy. However, the post has been in the red for a long time; in addition, the political beneficiaries have intruded upon the operation one way or another. Given this,The Independence Evening Post is now facing a variety of risks.
On June 9th of 1994, when President Chen Jeng Jung, the first political leader in the Independence Evening Post business, started to be in charge of the Independence Evening Post, the Industrial Union enforced the Editorial Agreement which aimed to guard the autonomy of the public opinion by voting the editor. Thus, the following"Great 901 Parade of News Autonomy" became one of the most critical events in the news business. In 1999, Chen Jeng Jung announced that the publishing of the daily news stopped. Furthermore, the Industrial Union got involved and argued for the preservation of people’s working right. All of these contributed to the concern from the public.
In June 2001, as the post had no funds and remained dying, the Industrial Union took the place of the management to continue the business, which was almost an impossible mission at that time. Under the scenario of limited sources, the Industrial Union transferred its feature by computerization and launched the digital Independence Evening Post on January 16th of 2004. On February 16th of 2004, the new office was set up in Taipei City. Moreover, on October 1st, the newspaper was resumed in the northern Taiwan covering Ta-Yuan, Hsin-Chu and Miao-Lee and 18,000 copies were issued. In January of 2005, the office was moved in order to keep on the business.
Since the labor has replaced the management in terms of role playing and functioning, there must be some sort of insistence and motivation to support the ideas of self-help and independent operation. What are they? They are the notions of localization, neutralization, objectivism, and no interference in any party or camp, which can be traced back to the tradition with which The Independence Evening Post was established. In other words, these notions are what the labor movement of the Industrial Union of The Independence Evening Post lies in to enlighten the essential function of the news business.
Starting from 2001 till 2005, he labor movement of the Industrial Union of The Independence Evening Post never stops. Based on the organization of the management, it plays the role of the management and realizes the function accordingly. In this regard, the Industrial Union truly highlights the alternative labor movement. Not only does the Industrial Union show the specialty in the form of movement, it also set the criterion for the mass media business whose idealism is gradually fading away.
