Most of the available literature focuses on how to prevent smoking and relapse, and very little literature follows up on quitting behaviors and treatment outcome. This research study investigates clients who have being counseled by counselors of Taiwan Smokers Helpline, all of them have completed the whole counseling process. The counseling process ended six month to one year prior to the time of interview. The primary purpose of this research study is to learn more about the psychosocial factors of the clients’ quitting behaviors, which can be used to develop a more effective treatment program for people who want to quit smoking. Nine research subjects (four successfully quit smoking and five fail to quit smoking) are referred by the Taiwan Smokers Helpline. All subjects have expressed interest in participating in this study prior to being contacted for the interview. Semi-structural individual interview method is used in this study. Seven psychosocial factors that endorse quitting behaviors are identified, including self-efficacy, resistance of self-efficacy, smoking patterns, impact of other’s persuasion, changes of attitude, impression management, social support and pressure. The research findings suggest that paying more attention on psychosocial factors when counseling clients may increase the effectiveness of treatment in quitting smoking. Further research is needed to better understand the how each psychosocial factor contributes to the mechanism of changes in quitting behaviors. Ching-Jan Chang 張景然 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 104 zh-TW
