These chemical compounds can interfere with animal physlogical responses such as metabolism、behavior、proliferate and sexual. So, they belong to endocrine disrupter substance(EDS)or so-called environment hormones. In this study, actinomycete strains were isolated from Taiwan river sediments. They were incubated in di-butyl phthalate(DBP)mineral salt borth for 2 weeks. Degeradation level were detected by UV(276nm)absorbance assay after a triple-fold extraction with n-hexane. Metabolic intermediates were detected by UV(276nm)absorbance after removing the n-hexane layer and acidifying the aqueous layer with 6N HCl. Quantities of DBP and its metabolic intermediates were also determined by GC-FID and HPLC. Findings are as fellows:(1)UV assay is a convenient method in determination of DBP-degeradation, but GC-FID method is more accuracy. (2)UV assay is not useful in detection of degeradation intermediates because it may be interfered by other metabolites. On the other hand, HPLC method is very suitable in quantitative analysis of degeradation metabolites. (3)Most DBP-degeradation actinomycetes did not accumulate mono-butyl phthate(MBP) or phthalic acid(PA). Over fifty percent of actinomycete isolates had the ability to degerade DBP. Among them, isolates belonging to Corynebacterineae had a higher ratio of DBP-degeradability than those belonging to Streptomycineae.(4)Many Streptomycetes isolates colud degerde DBP. It was not report before.(5)Actinomycete strains isolated from DBP-strong polluted river sediments had a higher ratio of DBP-degeradability than those isolated from weak-polluted river sediments.(6)Most of DBP-strong degeraders isolated from DBP-weak polluted river sediments were not belonging to the geneus Streptomycineae, but geneus belonging to suborder of Corynebacterineae.
