Description
Summary:碩士 === 東吳大學 === 社會學系 === 93 === This essay discusses about Gregory Bateson’s Ecology of Mind. As a Westerner, Bateson was concerned about the wrong epistemology-dualism of mind and matter-deep in his own culture. Bateson suggested a monistic way of thinking: “Mind without matter cannot exist; matter without mind can exist but is inaccessible.” According to Bateson, there will be no problem of mind and matter, if we recognize the ultimate giant complex mental system that we are a part of. This helps us separate from Double Bind, and separate from the difficult situation where human is caught in. Double bind is “ a situation in which no matter what a person does, he ‘can’t win.’” One who is in double bind for too long, will get sick or even die. There are many logical types in mental system. If one is confused by them, making errors of logical typing, lacking meta-communication, one will get in double bind situation.
