碩士 === 東吳大學 === 日本語文學系 === 93 === Japanese novel Ningensikkaku was released in 1948, composed of 3 pieces of journals written by the main character of the novel Oba-youzou and preface and note by a third person. The content of the book depicts the misfortune of Youzou. In the first journal, Youzou starts the novel with saying “my life is shameful”, attracting readers’ attention. Indeed, in Ningkensikkaku, readers would find that Youzou does embarrass himself throughout his life. But from the perspective of the third person, what causes Youzou’s misfortune is Youzou’s father. However, when we realize the consequences of why the third person says so, we can see that this statement does not establish. Also, Youzou analyses the causes of his misfortune, saying “My misfortune is caused by the inability to say no.” Based on such statement, this thesis assumes that the causes of Youzou’s misfortune life lie in Youzou himself. In order to find out what accounts for Youzou’s misery, the thesis analyses how Youzou gets along with others, by which we can conclude whether Youzou’s tragedy is caused by the defects of his personality or by the third person. In this case, Youzou’s image can be established by personality analysis and how it relates to his miserable life can be understood.
