Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 造形藝術研究所 === 93 === This research approaches the stylish development of portraiture in conté crayon fruqucntly seen in early Taiwan funeral occasions and house halls in the context of art history, and aims to probe into its social significance from the making process of photographing and painting to the ancestor worship practice as a reminder of the dead. In addition the research presents a practical survey of the funeral and burial business by face-to-face interviews with the owners. From the perspective of portrait painters, the styles and contents of these portraits differ a lot depending on the needs and budgets of their descendants. Through a chronological order of the historical documents and resources, all the formal characteristics, including the costumes, posture, decorations on the body and furniture drawn within the picture, and the location of the portraits placed in the hall engender various signifying meanings. The iconographical observation provides leads for further study on the economic and social status, and the transition of their living formation at that time.
