Children’s fantasy narrative serves an important role in preschool children’s development.
The main focus of this research project is to explore the style and structure of children’s fantasy narratives from the storytelling of children in class .The research collects 103 stories from senior class ( the children aged 4~6 ) as samples and uses sound recording, group discussing and play performing as methods . It analyzes children’s storytelling style, background, topic, ending and plot structure by happening frequency , statistical percentage and illustrations. The results of research project are stated as below :
1. Style of children’s fantasy narratives: The children’s stories are mainly by fantasy and fiction. From them, we find adventure is the most popular style among children’s stories
which suggests children are long to discover by adventures.
2. Structure of children’s fantasy narratives:
( I ) Children’s story background :
A. Character : Children like to use “ human being ” as character in their story.
Since of family’s life, ”Mamma” is the most mentioned. In addition, they prefer to mention 2 persons in their story , but with increase of age, children gradually like to focus on less characters.
B. Spot : Children often ignore and do not state spot in their story. However with the increase of age, the spot of story tends to be from home extend to outside, away from home, and mostly fix one spot to be mentioned.
C. Time : Most of children can not state happening time clearly in their story. Effected by fairy tale, children often introduce” Long long ago” as their beginning of story. From the research, mainly, single and simple happening time prefers to be stated and whereas different happening time seldom to be mentioned.
( II ) Children’s story topic : Children like to use “interacting with someone else” as their story topic, especially the parents’ love for them which indicates the importance of family on them.
( III )Children’s story ending : Children prefer happy ending for their story. Like”
Bad guys have been killed .” is often used as their ending. “Good defeats evil” is the
final goal of their story.
( IV )The levels of plot structural complexity: Most of children stories are at level 3.
Obviously main dyadic structure of them is “ villainy and villainy nullified” and almost appears in balance situation. ‘
