Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒童文學研究所 === 93 === Traveling, as a rite that the adult explores her / his life and achieves the self-growth, is full of attraction for women. And for children, who cannot travel freely in a reality under the protection and supervision of adults, the creation of a fantastic world in children’s literature and the “traveling- searching” model “home / away / home” provide them the experience in their personal initiation and development. The seeds of the desire to travel, for girls particularly, have already sown and grown in the mind of the girls Alice, Dorothy and Wendy, and so on.
This thesis tries to employ the viewpoints of travel and travel literature. From the Western children’s literature the travels in fantastic worlds, which have been carried out by the girl protagonists alone, are selected. And this thesis combines the characteristics of “canons” and “modern fantasy” as a basis of this study of girls’ travel writing. This thesis divides into six chapters: chapter one is the introduction; chapter two is to examine the bias assumptions of the patriarchal society, the space and the gender before the girls’ depart. The image of girls’ travel characters is also analyzed in this chapter. From chapter three to five, after the girls began their journey, which is a round traveling structure “home / away / home”, the differences between the inside / the outside, the self / the other, and the departure / the return of the female travelers are investigated. Chapter six is the conclusion.
